The History of The Pentagram
The Pentagram is a universal symbol. It is a
five pointed star that can be drawn in one
continuous movement. The five points are
all equal and represent the five essential
elements of the Universe: Earth, Air, Fire,
Water and Spirit.
The Pentagram symbol was used in ancient
Greece and Babylonia and has a number of
magical associations. Worn by modern
pagans and Wiccans as well as those who
practice other magical systems including
Traditional Witchcraft & High Magick, the
Pentagram symbol resonates with many
people.
Christians once commonly used the
pentagram to represent the five wounds of
Jesus and it also has associations within
Freemasonry. The pentagram has long been
associated with the planet Venus, and the
worship of the goddess Venus. It is also
associated with the Roman Lucifer, who is
reflected in the planet Venus as the Morning
Star: the bringer of light and knowledge.
The Pentagram Within the Circle: Power
& Protection
The Pentagram is often depicted within a
circle and in this form is a symbol of safety,
security, power and protection; the five
elements are combined and preserved within
the Circle of Power.
When depicted within a circle, some people
refer to the symbol as a 'pentacle' though
this is not technically accurate. The pentacle
is a magical tool; usually a round plate made
of wood, copper, stone or clay with a
Pentagram inscribed on it. This magical tool
acts to concentrate elemental energies
together for the purpose of consecrating or
cleansing other objects.
The Magic Circle for Ritual, Healing,
Magick & Spiritual Practice
The Magic Circle is an energetic barrier that
forms a boundary between the world of men
and the higher spiritual realms of light
beings.
There are many rituals for casting a Magic
Circle in ceremonial magic, other magical
traditions, paganism and Witchcraft/Wicca.
The emphasis on the purpose of the circle
varies but generally speaking, the casting of
a circle sets aside an area outside of time
and space in order that the area be held
sacred for the duration of the work at hand.
The Magic Circle acts as a protective barrier,
keeping out any negative influences and also
acts as a container, preserving the energy
within it.
All elements combine as one within the
Magic Circle and form a centre of wholeness
and stability. When we are within the circle,
this wholeness brings new balance to us and
may have a powerfully healing effect.
The Magic Circle as Sacred Space
When cast, the Magic Circle is set apart from
the mundane and the physical world and
becomes a sacred space.
The Magic Circle is an area of perfection and
its integrity is emphasised by its spherical
shape; a symbol of strength and power. The
elements combine within the circle to create
a power stronger than the sum of their parts
and this power is perfectly balanced.
Within a Magic Circle we may perform
healing, meditation and consecration of
objects for magical purposes or for healing
work. We may also perform rituals to
observe the changing seasons or spell work.
The Tanden (Dantian) Energy Centre
The Tanden is an energy centre, also called
the 'Dantian', which literally means "red
field" and is loosely translated as "elixir
field". This centre is the source of our
creative power as human beings. It is our
centre of gravity and is specifically located in
the abdomen, 3 finger widths below and two
finger widths behind the navel.
The Tanden is sometimes divided into
sections. The lower Tanden, which is at the
navel as described above, is associated with
physical energy and sometimes sexuality.
The middle Tanden is located at the Solar
plexus, in line with the base of the ribs and
deals with respiration and the health of the
internal organs. The upper Tanden is located
at the third eye and relates to
consciousness, intent, spirit and the brain.
The Tanden (Hara) in Chinese, Japanese
& Buddhist Traditions
In speaking specifically of the lower of these
three points, the word Tanden is often used
interchangeably with the Japanese word
“hara” which literally means "belly". In
Chinese and Japanese tradition, it is
considered the physical center of gravity for
the human body and by extension the seat
of one's internal energy (qi/chi/prana/ki). A
master of calligraphy, swordsmanship, tea
ceremony, martial arts is said to be "acting
from the hara" in Japan.
Buddhist teachers often instruct their
students to centre their mind in this area to
control their thoughts and emotions. Acting
from the Tanden is said therefore to be
related to the state of spiritual
enlightenment.
If you were to lie down on a large
pentagram with your feet and hand
connected to the points of the circle, your
Tanden centre would fall within the pentagon
within the centre of the symbol and the
centre of the circle; the point at which all
elements combine.
The Magic Circle to Contain &
Concentrate Power
When working with a Magic Circle, after it’s
been prepared, the elemental forces are
invoked to be contained & concentrated
within the sacred space. This process is
covered in the Elemental Pentagram & Magic
Circle Empowerments Course.
Once the elemental forces are invoked
within, the Circle acts as a natural energetic
barrier to keep these forces concentrated
within that particular space. It acts as a
boundary to prevent any negative or
hindering forces from affecting the energy,
person/people and objects within the circle.
The nature of the Magic Circle means the
energy within is focused & reinforced. This
creates an ideal energetic environment for
your spiritual practice, magickal work and
healing for yourself or others.
